The Japanese only traded amongst themselves with precious commodities such as silk, pearls, fish, and paper currency (Japanese Yen). It wasn't until 1853, when Commodore Matthew C. Perry established the first trade agreements with the empire. After the agreements, Europe began to demand the rare products of silk and other commodities than Japan owned. |
