Before the Meji period, Buddhist missionaries brought their religion to Japan and influenced the emperor with the teaching of Siddhartha Gautama (Budda). The monks became a major political powers in the Emperor's Royal court and were in many cases allied with a certain Shogun or Daiymo. If a the shogun they served wanted to eliminate a certain rival, in some cases the priest that was most loyal to him would to take job of removing the rival from the competition with the Shogun. |
